Trend Versus National Average in the Ratio of Elective Waiting List Patients with a Decision to Admit to the Number of Open General & Acute Beds

The chart below shows a trend analysis of the ratio of the number of elective waiting list patients where a clinician has made the decision to admit the patient to hospital to the number of day and overnight general & acute beds open at the hospital.

This is a measure of the capacity of the Trust, all other things being equal, to treat the patients on the elective waiting list where that treatment involves a day case or overnight stay in hospital. The higher the value of the ratio, the more stretched the Trust’s capacity and so the longer the patient may have to wait.

To produce the charts below we have combined the Elective waiting times data from NHS England published here with Bed Availability and Occupancy data, also from NHS England, published here.

The source data can be found at the links above, along with explanations of each of the published measures. Users should familiarise themselves with this background when interpreting the charts.
