Trend in the Ratio of A&E Type 1 Attendances to Emergency Medicine FTEs

The chart below shows the trend over time in the ratio of A&E type 1 attendances to the number of Emergency Medicine full time equivalent medical staff (FTEs).

The chart allows the user to identify the trend in the relative capacity pressure on workforce of A&E activity levels.  In other words its staff’s capacity to manage the A&E workload assuming all other things were equal. The higher the bar the more type 1 activity per medical FTE and thus the more capacity pressured one would expect the A&E department(s) to be.

The source data for this chart are NHS England’s monthly A&E Attendance and Emergency Admissions dataset available here and NHS Digital’s NHS monthly Workforce Statistics dataset available here.  These are publicly available datasets.  Explanations of each of the published measures used in the chart are available via those links. Users should familiarise themselves with this background when interpreting the charts.
